Consumption Assumption

Multi-user interactive installation about unnecessary consumption

Consumption Assumption

A collaboration with Si Ping Lim, Consumption Assumption is a projected, multi-user interactive piece meant to call into question our relationship with consumer items, consumer culture, how we view ourselves through what we buy and how quickly we throw these things out.

Originally made for the March 2020 i Light Singapore festival the piece has people using their phones to create and fit falling Tetris-like blocks, composed of items in their life, on the large projection. Simultaneously everyone tries to fit their falling items in with others’, accumulating and accumulating until it is revealed that these items now make up our landscape, our city, our homes.

At the completion of the experience participants are shown ways for them to be more mindful or even take part in environmental efforts including donation, recycling and clean up opportunities.

Due to Singaporean quarantine protocols the original showing has been postponed to July 2021, hope to see you there!
